Reflect and Learn – Grow Forward

I recently lost a key account. It was someone I know, like, and trust so that made it more disheartening.

First, I wrote a note to the client to thank him for letting me know himself, and for his business. Selfishly, I did it thinking it might make me feel better, but it didn't.

After I sort of ignored feeling bad and kicked the dirt for a couple of days, I reflected on why I lost the account and what I could learn from it.

Make no mistake about it, the whole thing was 100% my fault. You see I said that I know, like, and trust the customer, and one day he felt the same way about me. Actually for a long time he felt that way about me and then I forgot to remind him.

I quit giving him know and like. In this case I'm confident he still trusts me, I just didn't consistently show him how much I know him and like him. Big mistake.

I' m sure I spent my time on things I thought were important when I wasn't spending it with this client, but I can tell you I'm very sure that the stuff I spent my time on was not more important than him.

Every time we say yes to something, we say no to something else. Aligning our time with the people we know, like, and trust will bring more gifts than spending our time focused on low priority problems that will always be there waiting to steal our attention.
